Scrushy ordered to pay $2.8B for HealthSouth fraud - Dallas Business Journal:

billion in damages by a civilk court judge for his rolein ’s massiv accounting fraud scandal. The HealthSouth founder was deemed liabld for losses incurredby shareholders, some of whom sued him seekinhg to recover their investments. Judge Allwin Horn announced the verdictt shortly after10 a.m. Thursday. Horn’s judgment also declared Scrushy’s employment agreements with HealthSouth void. HealthSouth said it will receive approximatelyt 40 percent of any money recoveredfrom Scrushy. Attorneyxs for the shareholders filed the suit againsrt Scrushy on behalf of HealthSout saying he directed the accounting scandal had requested $3.6 billion.
Scrushy testified during the trial and denied any He was brought to Jefferson County for the trial from a Texasafederal prison, where he is currently servin g seven years for bribing then-Gov. Don Siegelmab for a seat on a state healty carepolicy board. Scrushy was acquitted of criminalk charges in the HealthSouth fraudin 2005. HealthSoutnh said it is unsure how much mighrt be collectedfrom Scrushy, accordin to a news release. “We are pleasedx to see that justice has been served througn this judgment and that another chapter of our past has been putbehind us,” HealthSouth’s statement said.
